Department Of Civil Law

The Civil Litigation Division defends the Legislature, the Governor, judges, prosecutors, corrections officers, and most other state agencies and employees in civil lawsuits. Assistant attorneys general in this Division litigate cases in both state and federal courts involving a wide variety of subjects, including constitutional law and civil rights, disputes with Indian tribes, water rights, administrative law, employment law, and public policy issues, as well as bankruptcy, torts, and contract matters.

The Division also advises and assists state agencies in an effort to avoid costly litigation whenever possible. In addition, this Division's attorneys prosecute administrative licensing violations, represent the state's interests in charitable trusts, and negotiate settlements under the Kansas Tort Claims Act.
