Debt Collection Scam

People are receiving phone calls by someone reporting to be “McGoughan Law Firm” or “Anderson Law Firm”.  The caller states that they are with the “Affidavit Processing Unit” and make very aggressive demands for payment on a debt to “American Credit Services”.

They threaten legal action and arrest if the debt is not paid.  They often have some personal information about the victim.  They demand that the victim fax or send them all personal information and a method of payment.

If the victim becomes suspicious or argues with the caller that they know the call is a scam, the victim is called back some time later by someone reporting to be from the Attorney General’s Office who is, in fact, not associated with the office at all.

The imposter tells the victim that the Attorney General’s Office is investigating the phone calls and has the situation under control, but that payment should be made to the collection company if there are concerns.

If you are approached with the preceding information contact the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division immediately at 1(800) 432-2310.
