Attorney General Six releases annual report for Attorney General's Office
Record Medicaid recoveries, criminal prosecutions highlight Attorney General’s year
November 17, 2009 -- Attorney General Steve Six released today the Fiscal Year 2009 Annual Report for the Attorney General’s Office. Record recoveries to the Medicaid program, increased savings for consumers and Six’s personal prosecution of a murder case were a few of the accomplishments highlighted in the report.
“This report summarizes the efforts of my office during fiscal year 2009 and highlights just a few of our most significant accomplishments,” Six said.
The report outlines efforts made by the Attorney General’s Office to protect Kansas families, consumers and crime victims, while reducing the office’s State General Fund budget by more than 12%. For every Kansas tax dollar appropriated, the Attorney General’s Office saves, recovers or generates $5.48.
“In tough economic times, it is the responsibility of state leaders to encourage transparency, eliminate waste and do more with less,” Six said. “I made it a priority to find efficiencies in our agency budget, while continuing to improve our core services. I also focused on cracking down on fraud and abuse in government programs, recovering tax dollars for Kansas.”
A few of the accomplishments highlighted in the annual report:
- Attorney General Six becomes the first sitting attorney general to personally prosecute a criminal case in more than 34 years.
- Jodi Sanderholm’s killer was sentenced to death.
- Recovered more than $17.6 million in fraud and abuse for the taxpayer funded Medicaid Program.
- Creation of NetSafeKansas.com to help educate kids and parents about the threats they face on the Internet.
- Saved or recovered more than $8 million for Kansas consumers. This is more than each of the five previous years.
- Creation of the Consumer Mediation Program to reduce lawsuits and litigation fees.
- Awarded record amount—more than $4.6 million—in compensation to Kansas victims of violent crime.
- Creation of the Batterer Intervention Program to establish and implement standards for the programs that provide services to batterers.
- Improved the efficiency of the Attorney General’s Office by reducing the State General Fund budget by 12.78%, cutting the office-wide travel budget by more than $100,000 and making the Consumer Protection Division 100% self-funded
