Morrison increases child protection by reconvening Amber Alert Task Force

Jan. 30, 2007 -- Attorney General Paul Morrison announced today that he will reconvene the AMBER Alert Task Force in an effort to increase child safety. The task force is charged with perfecting the process of issuing an AMBER Alert and successfully recovering missing children.

The complete AMBER Alert Task Force has not met in nearly two years.

“There are numerous new technologies and techniques available to help law enforcement better serve Kansas families and more effectively locate missing kids. I am anxious to meet with the task force and discuss improvements to the Kansas AMBER Plan,” Morrison said.

The goal of the AMBER Plan is to safely recover children who law enforcement agencies believe have been abducted and are in danger of serious harm or death. Currently, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, other law enforcement and the media work together to alert the public quickly when a child goes missing.

“My goal is to help law enforcement find missing children faster by implementing new ideas, technologies and techniques in the Kansas AMBER Alert Plan,” Morrison said. “The first few hours a child is missing are the most critical and we must be as efficient as possible with how we handle these situations.”

The task force will meet in early March to discuss ideas for possible improvements to the Kansas AMBER Plan.
