After hearing about the natural disaster that have occurred in Kansas recently, I would like to donate money or assistance to the rebuilding effort. What is the best way to make a positive impact as people are trying to rebuild their lives?
Dear Concerned Kansan,
In the last few months, our state has been hit by dangerous storms and severe weather. This spring’s storms brought tornadoes, hail, strong winds, and all the problems they create. My office has been working directly with the communities of Manhattan and Chapman to put the pieces back together.
Many Kansans have already donated time and money to the recovery effort. This generosity will continue during the coming months. However, Kansans should be wary when donating money and make sure the charities are legitimate.
Unfortunately in times of tragedy, scam artists sense an opportunity. In the wake of natural disasters, phony charities can spring up to exploit peoples’ good nature.
Here are some tips for contributing to charities in the wake of a natural disaster:
- Ask for financial statements of the organization to determine who will benefit from your donation.
- Perform an internet search on the charity to see if they have an informational web site, or if someone has posted a complaint about them.
- Visit www.kscharitycheck.org or call (785) 296-4565 for a list of charitable organizations registered in Kansas, information on your rights as a consumer and the Kansas Charitable Organization and Solicitation Act.
- Check with the Better Business Bureau for information on tax deduction qualifications and charity ratings: www.give.org, www.charitywatch.org, and www.guidestar.org
- Never give cash, credit card or bank account information to an organization. Always pay by check so you have a receipt of your contribution.
The cities of Chapman and Manhattan are hard at work rebuilding their communities. Anything Kansans can do will be a big help. Here is information for those who would like to assist in the cleanup efforts:
