March 4, 2008 -- Attorney General Steve Six announces the creation of the Songs of Kansas Scholarship program. This program will assist Kansas students majoring in music at one of the state’s six universities.
“This is a rare, but wonderful opportunity to give those Kansas students gifted in music assistance with their college education,” Six said. "This program also allows my office to put money from litigation towards a good cause."
The Songs of Kansas Scholarship program will award nearly $45,000 total during the 2008-09 academic year. The funding will be distributed equally among the state’s six universities. Each university will then be able to award three scholarships of about $2,500 each to voice and instrumental students. The students must be residents of Kansas majoring in music to be eligible for the scholarship.
“I’m honored to be a part of this program and pleased to work with the Kansas Board of Regents to administer this scholarship program,” Six said.
The Kansas Board of Regents will advertise the scholarship through each university’s Department of Music. The universities will also forward their award recipient recommendations to the Board of Regents.
“The Songs of Kansas scholarships will have a positive impact on the education pursuits of students seeking a music degree,” said Reginald L. Robinson, President and CEO of the Kansas Board of Regents. "The Board applauds Attorney General Six for making the settlement funding available to students, and we look forward to announcing the scholarship recipients in June 2008.”
The deadline for scholarship submissions will be May 1, 2008. Recipients will be notified by June 1, 2008.
Funding for the program emerged from a settlement between the Kansas Attorney General’s Office and Sony Music Entertainment, Inc.
