Three charged in scheme to defraud Medicaid program

Feb. 29, 2008 -- In an effort to eliminate fraud from a state health program, Attorney General Steve Six announced today that his office filed charges against three Montgomery County residents for making false claims to the Kansas Medicaid Program.

Mike Hix, Jay Miles Thompson, and Melissa Hix were charged with conspiring to submit time sheets for Home Community Based Services (HCBS) that were not provided. The state alleges that the three conspired to make false claims to the Medicaid program totaling over $48,000. It is also alleged that Mr. Hix and Mr. Thompson defrauded the Medicaid Program by filling out and signing time sheets for services not ever provided.

“Fraud in our state health programs causes healthcare costs to go up,” Six said. “We will not tolerate abuse of the system, fraud or false claims at the expense of the Kansas Medicaid Program and Kansas citizens.”

Mrs. Hix was charged with one count conspiracy to make a false claim to the Medicaid Program, a severity level 9, non-person felony. Mr. Hix was charged with one count conspiracy to make a false claim to the Medicaid Program and one count making a false claim to the Medicaid Program, a severity level 7, non-person felony. Mr. Thompson was also charged with one count conspiracy to make a false claim to the Medicaid Program and one count making a false claim to the Medicaid Program.

These are only allegations and Mr. and Mrs. Hix and Mr. Thompson will be presumed innocent until proven otherwise in a court of law.
