Morrison to meet with US AG Alberto Gonzales

March 6, 2007 -- Attorney General Paul Morrison will be meeting today with U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to discuss a number of legal and law enforcement issues facing Kansas.

“Law enforcement today requires a cooperative approach to tackle the number of legal issues that cross state lines,” Morrison said. “Today’s meeting with our federal counterparts is a critical part of that process.”

Morrison traveled to Washington, D.C. for the face-to-face talks as part of the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) annual spring meeting. Forty-six of the nation’s Attorneys General gathered for collective discussions on federal and state approaches to homeland security, consumer protection, gangs, combating illegal drugs, child pornography and issues related to data retention.

“This dialogue is important for me and my colleagues across the country who are increasingly concerned about maintaining homeland security and protecting the public,” said Morrison.

“It is absolutely necessary for the states and the feds to discuss how to crack down on crimes that are without borders,” Morrison said. “These types of crimes are on the rise and involve everything from drug trafficking to online crimes that exploit and victimize our children.”

“Many state and local law enforcement programs are in jeopardy, and we’re concerned about continuing and increasing federal funding for these programs.” Morrison said. “Technology and training are critical for law enforcement to keep Kansans safe.”
