Cheever sentenced today on all charges

Jan. 23, 2008 -- Scott Cheever was sentenced today on charges related to the 2005 murder of Greenwood County Sheriff Matt Samuels.

In October, Cheever was convicted by a Greenwood County jury of capital murder, four counts attempted capital murder, criminal possession of a firearm, and manufacturing methamphetamine.

“This outcome is due to the cooperation of many law enforcement agencies at the local, state and federal levels,” Morrison said. “This was a team effort focused on justice for Sheriff Samuels and his family.”

Cheever was sentenced to death by a jury in October. The judge affirmed that sentences today and also sentenced him to a total of 737 months for the remaining crimes.

  • 1: Capital murder sentenced to death.
  • 2: Attempted capital sentenced to 272 months
  • 3: Attempted capital murder sentenced to 155 months.
  • 4: Attempted capital murder sentenced to 155 months.
  • 5: Attempted capital murder sentenced to 155 months.*
  • 6: Manufacturing methamphetamine sentenced to 146 months.
  • 7: Criminal possession of a firearm sentenced  to 8 months.
*    Sentences for count 1 through 5 will run consecutively, while counts 6 and 7 will run concurrent.
