Attorney General reaches plea agreement with Edwardsville city councilman

Dec. 4, 2007 -- Attorney General Paul Morrison announced today that his office has reached a plea agreement with Edwardsville city councilman Robert Lane.

Lane pled “no contest” and was found guilty of two counts Compounding a Crime, a class A, nonperson misdemeanor; one count Conspiracy to Commit Official Misconduct, a class C, nonperson misdemeanor; and one count Official Misconduct, a class A, nonperson misdemeanor.

Lane was sentenced today and will serve ten days in county jail followed by one year probation. He will surrender himself to authorities on December 10, 2007, and serve his time in the Jefferson County jail at his personal expense. Lane will also pay court costs and probation fees.

“Given the evidence in this case, I believe this is a fair outcome,” Morrison said. “Robert Lane violated the public trust and was given an appropriate sentence.”

Lane will immediately surrender his certification as a law enforcement officer to the Kansas Commission on Peace Officer’s Standards and Training.

“We will not tolerate corruption of any kind in Kansas and those who break the law will be held accountable,” Morrison said.
