Consumer Corner: Protect yourself while holiday shopping online

Dear Attorney General,

I plan to do most of my holiday shopping online this year. As I’ve searched for gifts, I found some of the best prices on unfamiliar, smaller Web sites. How can I be sure it is safe to purchase from these retailers?

Dear Kansas Consumer,

More people than ever are expected to shop online for holiday gifts this year. Shopping online can provide you with a wider range of options, as well as save you time and money. Unfortunately, consumers can also wind up becoming the victims of scams.

The sheer volume of purchases during the holiday season results in a higher number of consumer complaints. To avoid many of these problems, use the following tips:
  1. Only shop with reputable sellers. Ask family and friends to recommend online retailers. If you are not familiar with a Web site, check for a physical address and phone number. Call the number to find out how long they have been in business. Also, look for logos from organizations that certify online retailers such as the BBBOnline (Better Business Bureau), Verisign, or TRUSTe. Never give your business to an online retailer if you have concerns about its legitimacy
  2. Check for additional fees. A retailer may advertise a discounted price, but then tack on extra shipping and handling or return fees to the final bill.
  3. Determine delivery times. Many reputable companies provide the ability to track a delivery or alert you when an item is mailed. Check the policy of your retailer before you make the purchase to ensure you get the package on time.
  4. Understand the refund and return policy. Many retailers require returns within a certain number of days, require certain fees or forms, or only issue store credit as a refund.
  5. Read the Web site Privacy Policy. Reputable retailers will explain what information they collect, why they collect it and whether they share information with third parties. If you are not comfortable the policy, shop somewhere else.
  6. Keep receipts. Print your confirmation message, purchase receipt and any other email communications. This documentation will help resolve your case if there are problems with the purchase.
  7. Update your anti-virus software and use a firewall. Online shopping puts you at an increased risk for viruses and hackers.
  8. Only enter financial information onto a secure Web site. Look for the padlock icon on the lower corner of your browser and a Web address that begins with “https” rather than “http.” Never send financial information over email.
