Understanding the Kansas No-Call Act

Feb. 19, 2007

Dear Attorney General,

How do I sign up to be removed from lists used by telemarketers? Our household receives dozens of calls every week from people selling something, telling us that we won some sort of sweepstakes or asking us to donate to their charity. Recently we started receiving these calls on our cell phones. How can we make these types of calls stop?

Dear Kansas Consumer,

You can greatly reduce the number of unwanted calls to your home or cell phone by signing up for the Kansas No-Call List. State law requires any person or company planning to call Kansas consumers with the intent of selling something to purge their lists of numbers registered with the no-call list.

Signing up your residential or cellular phone number is quick, easy and free. You can call toll-free 1-888-382-1222 (or 1-866-290-4236 for TTY) from the number you wish to register with the list or sign up online at www.donotcall.gov.

Placing your phone number on the Kansas No-Call List will help eliminate unwanted calls you receive, but there are a few exceptions to the law:

  • Telemarketing laws are aimed at companies trying to sell you something and do not apply to calls for charitable organizations, political candidates or non-profit issues.
  • Even if you sign up for the no-call list, a company may still call you if you have given them authorization or done business with the company within the past 36 months.
  • Business numbers are exempt from the Kansas No-Call Act. Only residential and cellular phones are qualified to be included on the Kansas No-Call List.
  • Your no-call registration only lasts five years. When that time has elapsed, you will need to re-register.
  • Every time a phone number changes ownership, it is removed from the no-call list. If you receive a new phone number, you will need to register that number.

Kansas consumers should be careful when providing personal information over the phone to unknown sources. Signing up for the Kansas No-Call List will help protect you from scams by cutting down on the number of unknown calls to your home or cell phone.
